Lemon Buttermilk Sherbet

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
2 Tbs grated lemon zest
4 cups buttermilk
Combine together sugar, lemon juice and zest in medium bowl. Add buttermilk and stir until sugar dissolves. Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap and chill until very cold, about 4 hours. Process mixture in ice cream maker according to manufacturer's instructions. Transfer to container with lid and keep frozen until served.
Note: For a subtle, intriguing twist on this sherbet, add 1/4 tsp of finely ground white pepper to the mixture before freezing.
