Lonesome Dove's Jalapeño Margarita

2 slices fresh jalapeño pepper
1 oz simple syrup or 1 Tbs sugar
5 oz fresh lime juice
2 oz good tequila
3/4 oz orange liqueur (Cointreau, Triple Sec, Grand Marnier)
Splash of orange juice or orange liqueur
lime wedges
Candied Jalapeño Pepper (optional)

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the fresh jalapeño slices with syrup or sugar. Add tequila, orange liquor, and lime juice and shake with ice until combined.

Rub rim of glass with lime wedge, and dip into coarse salt or coarse sugar if desired. Fill with ice. Strain margarita into glass and top with a splash of orange juice or orange liqueur. Garnish with lime wedge and Candied Jalapeño Pepper.
